Anticipated Opening of Epic Universe

On May 22, 2025, Universal will unveil Epic Universe, the first major theme park addition to the Orlando area in 25 years. This new facility promises to significantly influence the local tourism industry, joining established giants such as Universal Studios and Walt Disney World.

Spanning 750 acres, Epic Universe boasts five themed worlds:

  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – The Ministry of Magic
  • Super Nintendo World
  • How to Train Your Dragon – The Isle of Berk
  • Celestial Park
  • Dark Universe

Economic Impact of Epic Universe

Tourism is a primary economic driver in Central Florida, attracting over 74 million visitors in 2023 alone, which accounted for approximately half of the sales tax revenue in Orange County. The introduction of Epic Universe is expected to further enhance the area’s appeal.

“This is the first major, entirely new theme park in the U.S. in 25 years. This is a compelling reason to visit Orlando,” commented Casandra Matej, CEO of Visit Orlando. “When you see a project like Epic Universe, it creates a domino effect of economic benefits for our community.”

A Significant Investment by Comcast

Originally announced in 2019, Epic Universe represents Comcast’s largest investment in its theme park operations, reportedly totaling around $7 billion. This venture seeks to maximize the potential of Universal’s extensive library of franchises while strengthening its entertainment offerings, which already include Islands of Adventure and Volcano Bay.

From 2019 to 2023, Universal Orlando produced a substantial economic impact of $44 billion, as highlighted in a study by Sean Snaith of the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Economic Forecasting.

Employment Opportunities and Further Economic Growth

The construction of Epic Universe alone has created approximately 65,000 jobs. Overall, Universal generated 94,000 jobs nationwide in 2023, including diverse roles such as engineers and set designers. Snaith also calculated that Epic Universe’s opening might yield $2 billion for Florida’s economy in its inaugural year, alongside creating over 17,500 new jobs.

“The labor market in Florida is quite strong right now,” Snaith remarked. “We project that Florida will continue to outpace the national economy in growth and job creation.”

Broader Implications for the Local Business Ecosystem

The opening of Epic Universe is poised to bolster neighboring businesses, including hotels, rental car services, and local restaurants. “Since the start of construction, we’ve seen enhancements in infrastructure, housing, hotels, and dining options,” stated Jakob Wahl, CEO of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions.

Industry experts suggest that the arrival of Epic Universe will not only draw new visitors but also enhance the overall tourism ecosystem in Orlando. “When Disneyland Paris opened, local parks were initially concerned, but instead, they saw an increase in attendance,” Wahl noted. Such effects are likely to materialize in Orlando, enriching the destination’s offerings.

“Each day that guests extend their visit contributes millions in economic impact for our community,” added Matej.

Disclosure: Comcast owns NBCUniversal, the parent company of CNBC.
