Bank of America and Citibank to Close on Memorial Day as Major Banks Pause Services

Bank of America and Citibank have confirmed they will close all physical branch locations on Monday, May 26, 2025, in recognition of Memorial Day, a federal holiday that pays tribute to U.S. military personnel who lost their lives in service. These closures will leave millions of customers temporarily without access to in-person banking services.

This national observance typically prompts widespread shutdowns across the financial sector. Other leading U.S. banks, including Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase, Capital One, PNC, Truist, TD Bank, and U.S. Bank, are widely expected to follow standard protocol and close their branches in observance of the holiday.

Financial Institutions Join in National Observance

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May each year and is one of the ten federal holidays recognized by the United States government. On this day, public and private institutions across the country traditionally close to honor those who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

In line with this tradition, Bank of America’s more than 3,800 branches across the country will remain shuttered for the day. Customers are encouraged to use online banking tools and mobile apps to manage their accounts, check balances, and conduct transfers.

Citibank, which serves millions of customers through hundreds of branches, is also suspending in-person operations for the day. Despite physical closures, the bank will maintain access to its digital platforms to minimize disruption.

Online and Mobile Services Still Available

While physical branches will be closed, major banks will continue offering most services through their digital infrastructure. Customers can expect uninterrupted access to:

  • Online account management

  • Mobile check deposits

  • Bill payments

  • Electronic transfers

  • ATM withdrawals and deposits (where available)

Customer service hotlines may operate on modified schedules, and response times could be slower due to reduced staffing.

Delivery and Shipping Services Also Limited

In addition to banking closures, delivery giants such as FedEx and UPS will also observe Memorial Day with limited operations:

  • FedEx will suspend regular pickup and delivery services, maintaining only its emergency Custom Critical deliveries.

  • UPS will halt standard shipping operations but keep its Express Critical services active for urgent deliveries.

Those expecting time-sensitive shipments are urged to plan accordingly and verify expected delivery timelines in advance.

Tips for Holiday Weekend Preparedness

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, customers are encouraged to prepare for potential service interruptions by completing essential banking and shipping tasks ahead of the holiday.

Before Memorial Day:

  • Visit bank branches by Friday, May 23, to ensure all in-person transactions are completed.

  • Schedule any necessary bill payments or transfers before the weekend.

  • Check your bank’s mobile app or website for updated holiday hours and digital service availability.

Memorial Day and the American Tradition

Beyond its logistical impact, Memorial Day remains a day of deep reflection and patriotic observance. Communities across the country will hold parades, flag ceremonies, and memorial services to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Memorial Day also marks the unofficial start of summer. Families often gather for barbecues, beach outings, and road trips, making it one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

Public Services and Closures

In addition to banks and shipping companies, most federal and state offices will also be closed, including:

  • Post offices

  • Courthouses

  • DMV offices

  • Public libraries

Public transit systems may operate on reduced or weekend schedules, so commuters are encouraged to check local services in advance.

Looking Ahead

Banking operations and regular delivery services are expected to resume on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. Until then, digital banking tools and critical logistics services will continue to bridge the gap, ensuring that essential financial and shipping needs are met.

For individuals relying on routine banking or scheduled package deliveries, now is the time to make necessary adjustments and take proactive steps to avoid last-minute complications during the holiday weekend.
