The FBI is currently investigating a tragic incident in New Orleans where a pickup truck was driven into a crowd early Wednesday morning, resulting in the death of ten individuals and injuring thirty-five others. The suspect has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas. The FBI reported that an ISIS flag was discovered inside the vehicle and is examining potential connections between Jabbar and the terrorist organization.
The attack occurred around 3:15 a.m. on Bourbon Street, a popular area in New Orleans particularly frequented by tourists. According to New Orleans Police Superintendent Ann Kirkpatrick, the vehicle was driven at a high speed with the apparent intent to cause harm. During the chaos, two police officers were also shot but are reported to be in stable condition. The attacker was killed by law enforcement in response to the incident.
Local leaders, including New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, labeled the event a “terrorist attack” and requested prayers for the victims. President Joe Biden conveyed that all necessary federal resources would be made available for the ongoing investigation. Additionally, President-elect Donald Trump denounced the attack as “an act of pure evil” and pledged support for the city’s recovery efforts.
Authorities reported that the vehicle contained weapons and possible improvised explosive devices. Bomb technicians are currently assessing the situation to ensure public safety. Despite the attack and the surrounding chaos, local events such as the Sugar Bowl football game are still planned to proceed, although citizens are urged to stay clear of the affected area.
