Lucid Motors Acquires Nikola’s Arizona Assets Amid Bankruptcy

In a surprising turn of events, EV manufacturer Lucid Motors has emerged as the leading bidder in the bankruptcy auction for assets belonging to electric trucking firm Nikola. The auction results were confirmed through a court filing released late Thursday.

Details of the Acquisition

Lucid Motors has pledged approximately $30 million in cash and various non-cash considerations to acquire Nikola’s Arizona factory, the lease for its Phoenix headquarters, as well as specific machinery, equipment, and inventory. This strategic move not only enhances Lucid’s operational capabilities but also allows them to potentially expand their workforce.

Rehiring Efforts

As part of their acquisition strategy, Lucid expressed intentions to offer employment opportunities to around 300 former Nikola employees. This initiative aims to retain valuable talent and expertise within the EV sector.

Unexpected Participation in Bankruptcy Proceedings

Lucid’s involvement in the bankruptcy auction came as a shock to industry observers, particularly since Nikola has been attempting to sell its entire business since filing for bankruptcy protection in February. While Lucid is predominantly focused on passenger electric vehicles, Nikola’s business model also includes hydrogen-powered technology, a field in which Lucid has yet to establish a presence.

Background Factors

Controversially, Nikola’s founder, Trevor Milton, who was convicted of fraud in 2022 but received a pardon from former President Trump earlier this year, had been evaluating his own bid for the startup’s assets. The court had previously barred Milton from inspecting Nikola’s factory and associated assets in person, which contributed to the competitive nature of the auction held on April 7.

Geographical Advantage

Lucid operates its primary manufacturing facility in Casa Grande, Arizona, further strengthening its rationale for acquiring additional space and resources through this deal. The integration of existing warehouses and equipment from Nikola is a calculated move to enhance their operational efficiency.

Next Steps in the Sale Process

While Lucid Motors has positioned itself as the top bidder for Nikola’s assets, the bankruptcy judge has permitted objections to the sale to be lodged until noon ET on Friday, April 11. A subsequent hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET to finalize the proceedings.

This acquisition marks a significant chapter for Lucid Motors as it navigates the evolving landscape of the electric vehicle market while broadening its operational footprint.
