In a surprising turn of events, EV manufacturer Lucid Motors has emerged as the leading bidder in the bankruptcy auction for assets belonging to electric trucking firm Nikola. The auction results were confirmed through a court filing released late Thursday.

Lucid Motors has pledged approximately $30 million in cash and various non-cash considerations to acquire Nikola’s Arizona factory, the lease for its Phoenix headquarters, as well as specific machinery, equipment, and inventory. Lucid’s involvement in the bankruptcy auction came as a shock to industry observers, particularly since Nikola has been attempting to sell its entire business since filing for bankruptcy protection in February. Background Factors
Controversially, Nikola’s founder, Trevor Milton, who was convicted of fraud in 2022 but received a pardon from former President Trump earlier this year, had been evaluating his own bid for the startup’s assets. The court had previously barred Milton from inspecting Nikola’s factory and associated assets in person, which contributed to the competitive nature of the auction held on April 7.
