Advancements in Neurotechnology: Empowering ALS Patients
The Journey of Communication
Recent advancements in neurotechnology are reshaping communication for individuals with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). A notable case is that of Smith, who has learned to steer a computer pointer directly with his brain, allowing him to text his wife and respond to emails with remarkable precision.
Despite his rapid rise to semi-fame, Smith remains cautious about delving into philosophical queries surrounding the authenticity of his AI-assisted communications. “I don’t want to wade in over my head,” he remarked. “I leave it for experts to argue about that!”
From Eye Tracking to Brain Implants
Previously reliant on an eye tracker that functioned solely in low-light environments, Smith described his experience as akin to being “Batman stuck in a dark room.” The introduction of a brain implant has significantly enhanced his communication capabilities, allowing him to type not only indoors but also in well-lit and outdoor settings, and do so at an increased speed.
How the Technology Works
The technology behind Smith’s communication involves thin wires implanted in his brain, which capture signals from neurons. These signals, though faint, are amplified, filtered, and sampled to extract vital features. Subsequently, the processed data is sent wirelessly to a MacBook, enabling Smith to control the computer’s pointer effectively.
AI Enhancements
Smith utilizes an app that leverages various AI technologies to facilitate faster and more natural expression. One innovative service from ElevenLabs has created a voice clone of Smith, utilizing recordings made prior to his illness. This cloned voice enables him to have his written words read aloud in a manner that resembles his natural tone.
Research into the perspectives of ALS patients regarding language assistance has shown a variety of responses. In a 2022 study by Klein, 51 ALS patients expressed differing views: some emphasized the importance of original communication, while others prioritized maintaining fluid conversation.
Integrating Language Models
In a video shared online, Smith highlighted the role of language models, including ChatGPT and Grok, which help in generating relevant replies to inquiries and conversation options. For instance, he shared a fun moment where he suggested a gift idea for a friend’s girlfriend who loves horses, choosing to recommend “a bouquet of carrots” in his own voice.
Although these responses are not his direct thoughts, they allow for quicker interaction than traditional typing methods, which could often take several minutes to craft complete responses.
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, Smith aspires to develop a more personalized language model that reflects his unique writing style and opinions. He expressed his desire for collaboration: “If you know of anyone who wants to help me, let me know,” he stated to MIT Technology Review.
