Proofpoint Acquires Hornetsecurity in $1 Billion Deal
Cybersecurity firm Proofpoint made headlines with its announcement on Thursday regarding a significant acquisition. The company is set to purchase Hornetsecurity, a specialist in Microsoft 365 security solutions, in a deal estimated at approximately $1 billion.
About Hornetsecurity
Founded in 2007 and based in Hanover, Germany, Hornetsecurity has established itself as a reliable provider through multiple rounds of funding, the latest being a growth round in 2022 with private equity firm TA Associates. Other key investors include PSG Equity and Verdane, further underpinning Hornetsecurity’s market positioning.
Implications of the Acquisition
This acquisition aligns with speculation that Proofpoint may be preparing for a public offering. If this occurs, it would represent the second IPO for the 23-year-old company, which first went public in 2012. Currently, it is under the ownership of private equity firm Thoma Bravo, which facilitated a $12.3 billion transaction to take the company private in 2021.
Proofpoint’s Acquisition Strategy
Proofpoint has demonstrated aggressive growth through acquisitions, with at least 25 documented purchases, including its most recent acquisition of Normalyze, a data security platform, in October. The acquisition of Hornetsecurity could serve to enhance Proofpoint’s market attractiveness to potential investors by adding Hornetsecurity’s robust annual recurring revenue of over $160 million, coupled with a notable year-over-year growth rate exceeding 20%.
Current Trends in Cybersecurity Funding
The announcement comes during a period of heightened investment in cybersecurity startups. Data from Crunchbase indicates that total venture capital funding for this sector exceeded $2.7 billion in the first quarter of 2024, marking a 29% increase from the previous quarter. Notably, March saw the largest acquisition of a venture-backed firm to date, with Alphabet’s planned acquisition of cloud security company Wiz for $32 billion.
