Astrophysicist Anais Mellor remarked on the unprecedented imaging capabilities of the facility, emphasizing its ability to capture broad and profound views of the cosmos. Beyond our solar system, the observatory will detect the dimming of stars caused by exoplanets transiting in front of them, which could yield thousands of new discoveries of these distant worlds. It is also anticipated that many brown dwarfs—objects that sit between stars and planets—will be identified.

Furthermore, the Rubin Observatory will explore our galaxy’s orbiting dim dwarf galaxy and capture detailed traces of star streams from galactic events where the Milky Way has consumed other galaxies. It plans to catalog approximately 20 billion previously unknown galaxies as part of mapping the cosmic web—a complex structure influenced by dark matter. This investigation into dark matter’s gravitational effects on the cosmic web structure may enhance our understanding of its nature.

The observatory is also positioned to observe millions of supernovae, helping to measure cosmic distances and the rate of the universe’s expansion. Researchers are particularly interested in exploring the possibility that dark energy, which contributes to this accelerated expansion, may have changed over time. Data on older supernovae could provide invaluable insights into these theories.
