Organizations that have recently discovered generative AI risk overlooking an older, more established form of AI, which the authors refer to as “analytical AI.” This form of AI is by no means obsolete and remains a critical resource for the majority of businesses. Although some applications of AI employ both analytical and generative AI, the two AI approaches are very different. To make decisions about the relative importance and value of generative and analytical AI, organizations must first understand the differences between the two technologies and the various benefits and risks associated with each. You can then decide which to prioritize in which situations based on your strategy, business model, risk tolerance, and other circumstances. However, without understanding the differences between the two, organizations risk not being able to fully utilize one or both types to transform their business.
