VPNSecure Cancels Lifetime Subscriptions After Acquisition
VPNSecure, a Virtual Private Network (VPN) provider, is facing significant backlash after the new ownership announced the cancellation of lifetime subscriptions. The recent acquisition by InfiniteQuant Ltd. has left many customers frustrated, particularly those who had purchased these subscriptions prior to the buyout.
Customer Complaints Emerge
As of March 2023, users began reporting issues with their lifetime subscriptions to VPNSecure, many of which were suddenly rendered inactive. Complaints escalated until the first official communication from the new owners appeared on April 28, stating that lifetime accounts had been deactivated starting that day.
The Communication Blunder
In an email, which has since been shared widely on platforms like Reddit, the company claimed:
“Unfortunately, the previous owner did not disclose that thousands of Lifetime Deals (LTDs) had been sold through platforms like StackSocial.”
The email elaborated that the prior ownership did not inform the new owners of these lifetime deals, complicating their service offerings.
New Offers for Affected Users
In response to the backlash, VPNSecure has proposed several discounted subscription options for affected customers. The new pricing includes:
- $1.87 for one month (instead of $9.95)
- $19 for one year (instead of $79.92)
- $55 for three years (instead of $107.64)
These promotional offers are available until May 31, 2023.
Clarifying the Acquisition Terms
The acquisition of VPNSecure has been characterized as an “asset-only deal,” meaning that the new owners received the company’s branding, technology, and infrastructure, but not its previous liabilities. A representative stated on Trustpilot that they were unaware of the existing subscriptions until several months post-acquisition.
Moreover, the current owners opted against legal action against the former owners, interpreting a lawsuit as financially impractical compared to the acquisition cost.
Public Reaction and Future Outlook
Customers have expressed skepticism regarding the new owners’ claims of being unaware of the lifetime subscriptions, especially since they reviewed various financial documents prior to the acquisition. The response from the company included an apology for any inconvenience caused, acknowledging the dissatisfaction among ex-subscribers.
