PITTSBURGH, PA — Western Pennsylvania is swiftly becoming a key national hub for artificial intelligence (AI), transforming its historic energy infrastructure into cutting-edge technology campuses. Spearheading this evolution is the $10 billion redevelopment of the Homer City Generating Station, which is poised to become one of the largest AI-focused facilities in the state. This groundbreaking initiative is not only redefining the region’s economy but also positioning Pittsburgh and its surrounding areas as leaders in the new age of AI innovation.
The transformation marks a pivotal shift for an area traditionally defined by coal and steel. Once a prominent coal-fired power plant, the Homer City site is being converted into a state-of-the-art data center campus powered by natural gas. This vast, 3,200-acre complex will feature advanced gas turbines capable of generating up to 4.5 gigawatts of electricity. The massive output is intended to support the growing demand for AI processing power, offering a sustainable and reliable energy solution.
Construction is set to begin in 2025 with full-scale operations expected by 2027. The initiative is projected to create over 10,000 temporary construction jobs and 1,000 permanent roles once the site is operational. One of the AI Strike Team’s most ambitious initiatives is “Operation Stargate Pittsburgh,” aimed at attracting national and international investment in the region’s AI ecosystem. The program also focuses on workforce development, providing residents with access to training and education that prepare them for high-skilled roles in AI, data science, and information technology. The goal is to create a self-sustaining cycle of innovation, employment, and economic revitalization.
This burgeoning AI hub is also having a profound effect on the communities surrounding Pittsburgh. Once-declining towns like Homer City are experiencing renewed hope and economic stimulus. The influx of capital, talent, and infrastructure is helping reverse decades of industrial decline.
