Lake Powell, one of the largest reservoirs in the United States, has reached its lowest recorded water level, highlighting the growing pressure on the Colorado River system and the communities, businesses and infrastructure that depend on it.

The reservoir’s elevation fell to approximately 3,519.91 feet above sea level, below the previous record low recorded in April 2023. The development was reported on August 16 as water levels across the Colorado River Basin continued to decline.

Lake Powell’s decline has also occurred alongside historically low levels at Lake Mead, another major reservoir on the Colorado River.
